The short answer
A Shopify inventory audit runs three passes over your product export. First, flag dead stock: units on hand with no sale in the last 90 days. Second, compute a reorder point per SKU from its sales rate and supplier lead time. Third, rank SKUs into ABC tiers by contribution so you know where the first two results actually matter.
Worked example
Export Products with inventory from Shopify admin, then pull a sales report for the same period. Join them on SKU. A row with qty_on_hand above zero and zero units sold in 90 days is dead stock, and the cash it represents is qty_on_hand multiplied by unit cost. Summed across the catalog, that figure is usually the number that changes the conversation.
Why the Shopify admin will not tell you this directly
Shopify tracks what you have and what you sold, and it does both well. What it does not do is join them over time per SKU and tell you which items are consuming cash without earning it. That join is the entire audit, and it is why the answer arrives in a spreadsheet rather than a dashboard.
The same gap explains why reorder points are absent. Shopify knows your on-hand quantity but not your supplier lead time or your tolerance for stocking out, and both are required inputs. Once you supply them, the arithmetic is straightforward.
Do the ABC pass before acting on anything
A dead-stock list sorted alphabetically invites you to start at the top, which is almost never where the money is. Sorted by tied-up value, the first ten rows usually account for more cash than the remaining hundreds combined.
The same ordering applies to reorder points. Getting the reorder point right on your A items protects most of your revenue; getting it right on C items is a rounding error you can safely leave until later.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find dead stock in Shopify?
Export your products with inventory levels and join that against a sales report for the same window. Any SKU with stock on hand and no units sold in 90 days is dead stock. Multiply the remaining quantity by unit cost to see the cash it is holding.
Does this work on every Shopify plan?
Yes. It runs on the standard product and sales exports that every Shopify plan provides, so no app, extension, or plan upgrade is required.
How many days with no sales makes a SKU dead stock?
Ninety days is a common default, but match it to your category. A staple that reorders every fortnight is a problem after 30 days of silence, while a seasonal item may be dormant for six months by design and is not dead at all.
